ch seems to be getting worse
Even with the powerful Ecosia engine and especially Google and Amazon, it is becoming less common for a search to feel like it has found the perfect site, product, or information the first time it attempts. This is due to a few factors:
- We have higher expectations. Even a great search no longer feels the same. Once we’re amazed a few times, we just keep going back to being amazed. It is difficult to match the amazing results we have become accustomed to. Ecosia has been a great resource for me. I have done over 10,000 searches in the past two years.
- Search engines are trying to sell us. They have discovered that selling advertisements to entities that lose in a search is very profitable. Therefore, the non-organic results crowding out our searches are not as valuable as those we would have found for free.
- Both the product manufacturers and site creators are becoming more adept at manipulating search engines. There are many fake Amazon books that claim to be the product you want, but there are also entire industries and product lines built around winning at search. It’s everywhere in any media environment where search is profitable. Companies that are built on more will want more.
- There is no competition. When a large organization wins at something they will shift their focus to make a profit and not improve it. The search leaders are becoming complacent and not willing to fight #3 or walk away from #2.
