The real question is, how long?
Since 1960, we’ve been hard at work on fusion (using “we” to include me with all humanity, and not because I’m an physicist).

The world will change for the better if fusion is possible in the next few decades. Geopolitics and the axis of colonialism/petrostates will be quickly rewritten. Climate issues will change. The ability to feed, house, and enrich billions of people’s lives will be greatly enhanced.
Many things are certain to happen eventually. It is often okay to place your bets on the course of history.
It is difficult to determine how long it will take. Then we do our best to make it happen.
