The engine does not provide any forward power when a car switches gears. It’s also more difficult to control the car’s forward motion by changing gear ratios.
But, it is possible to switch gears while you are moving. You can use your forward momentum and engine power to overcome the pause.
You’ll burn out your engine if you try to accelerate while not switching gears.
It’s a very useful metaphor.
