e and the small company (freelancer grid).

What quadrant should you aim for?

The industry giants need tonnage. You will find consistent, undifferentiated, commodity-priced work that is consistently delivered and can be hired. They won’t go out of their way to find freelancers who are unique, artisanal, or better. They just want to meet the spec at a fair price. They might even pay you on time.

Some rare birds are large potential clients who need freelancers to give them something that is unique and difficult to duplicate. They are aware that the work they need is rare and will pay accordingly. There are not many of them. Keep an eye out for one.

These are the final two categories.

The time waster is by far the most popular. These small businesses do not want to be or pretend to be industrial giants. They simply want commodity pricing in low volumes and lots of last-minute adjustments. These people are not smart, and the smart freelancer will avoid them, regardless of how well-meaning.

This brings us to the sweet spots. Client who values you with all of your uniqueness, pricing, and magic. One who is willing to pay a lot but gets more than they get.

If you search for them, they will be easier to locate. Particularly if you offer unique magic.
