AOL was my biggest client thirty years ago. Users were charged $3 per hour to access their internet precursor, while content providers were paid a royalties based on the time they spent on their site.
Our breakthrough game was invented in a chatroom. It was played for hours by millions of people. A series of AOL games were developed that was engaging and fun, and launched just a few weeks after launch. This was the most profitable project that I have worked on.
Then AOL switched to flat-rate monthly pricing. The royalties were then reduced to zero.
“Well, that’s what happened.”
Although the sunk cost was real, it didn’t really matter. It didn’t matter that our project was built upon a foundation that was gone. We were able to walk away from everything in less than an hour and build the products and tools we needed.
The world is changing faster than ever before. Sometimes, for the better. We always have the option to respond or react.
