We are not able to reveal our true emotions.
We don’t just mutter the first thing that comes to our minds in meetings, or insult people when we meet them. We are able to give people the benefit-of-the doubt (which requires us to have doubt before we can give the benefit) as well as to plan for the long term.
Yet, we continue to do the essential work of our lives without even thinking about it or trying to improve.
Both sides gain from engaging in conversation with others. Our contribution to the interaction includes the willingness to hide emotions that could undermine our partner’s efforts in this work.
Honesty and transparency are important. If it helps people get where they need, concealment can be an effective tool.
