Magic of Placebos
Two things are true:
A placebo has mechanisms that are beyond our understanding. It is a force that can disappear when we perform the double-blind test and is able to defy the laws of physics.
Or…
A placebo is an inducement for our subconscious mind to heal our body or increase our satisfaction.
The second option is more likely and will ultimately serve us better.
When someone says “that’s only a ‘placebo'” they undervalue the magic of culture, and the power of the mind to influence our bodies. It would be more accurate if we said, “we are fortunate that there is a powerful placebo available.”
The makers of designer handbags and sneakers, rare wines, herbal remedies, acupuncture, and rare wines can be proud of their efforts to create the ideal conditions for placebos to have maximum effect.
It’s not designed properly if it doesn’t help us believe.
