Laptops, not the pandemic, created distributed work. The office may be the best place to foster human interaction, but it’s not the most efficient.

The new CEO at Lyft has just told all workers in the HQ office to “come to work”. Of course, the workers have been working all along; they’ve just not been at the office.
To create conditions for distributed work to be effective, you need a different kind of leadership and management. When done right, it can be a powerful tool.
It is not necessary to count keystrokes, or use other false proxy measures of productivity.
The opportunity to offer meaning is the better option.
