Marvin Gaye chose Motown based on his strengths. He only wanted to work in the studio. He was not a fan of touring, and he believed he did not have the charisma or other qualities that make some musicians so great on stage. He struggled to find his feet because this didn’t fit with the strengths of the label.
Berry Gordy took Gaye and other Motown acts on tour in 1962. Gaye was not a natural performer but he had a competitive spirit. Little Stevie Wonder was put on before Gaye by the tour managers. Wonder was a crowd-pleaser and a magician when it came to getting fans excited. Gaye realized after a few performances that he needed to drastically improve his performance on stage if he wanted to keep the gig.
Gaye recorded his first Top 40 single two days after the tour. Gaye became as well known for his live performances and music as he was for his music.
His charisma was not a natural talent.
