What are we getting in return for our hard work? Of course, there’s the pay and satisfaction of a well-done job. Stress, human interaction, physical exertion and learning are all part of the job. The excitement of the unknown and the thrill of achieving the goal. We mostly get the daily.
I haven’t found any evidence that accounting at a candy company would be more enjoyable or satisfying than accounting at an insurance company.
Even circus clowns can get bored with their work.
It’s easy for us to get excited by what our company does… and to make decisions based on how the public perceives the outcome. Once the company has more people, the majority of our days are spent satisfying customers, meeting the needs of suppliers, and dancing to the tensions of doing our job.
We often use the end product as an excuse to tolerate a process that we dislike.
It might be better to focus on the process that you want to follow rather than the product.
