There are two types of coincidences.
We often mention the first. It is the magic that two things happen at once, which we never expected to occur. It’s not a coincidence that you and your lost college roommate are randomly seated next to each other on adjacent lanes at the age of 72. The world’s leading expert on the obscure Discs of Tron game finds a pristine copy abandoned near his mother’s home …. We can invent any number of explanations for such events, but the truth is that they are random.
The other type is far more important. When we confuse two separate incidents because they occurred at the same time, it is called a “time-related confusion”. You may feel sad if you see a can containing kombucha in the future. These events are coincidental.
It’s more common than ever that events near us can trigger instincts or expectations unrelated to the actual outcome.
It’s for this reason that marketers strive to place their ads or products at times in our lives where we are likely to be influenced by them. This is not just a coincidence. It was a planned event.
