Does it need to be defended?
A sign near a park says Beware of Bees.
A local merchant writes You are awesome on some receipts.
You might want to point out the sky comma when it appears in an incorrect place. It’s also missing where it could be helpful.
As language changes, the role of apostrophes will change. Greengrocers, and other people with pens, have taken over.
Some people add an extra apostrophe just to make themselves sound intelligent. Sometimes, people just give up trying to determine when to use an apostrophe.
The language will change whether we like it or not.
We have always lived in this cycle, where the informal becomes formalized and becomes a badge or honor before fading. This trend will only accelerate. Another shift brought about by technology.
PS So far, AI seems to be very good at apostrophes.
