enience and scams
We are now in the scam era. AI, borderless currencies and the internet are enabling more people to make a living by stealing, impersonating, defrauding and other forms of trust abuse.
This was hard when the world was not convenient. You met the banker, as well as your second cousin and the charity fundraiser.
We are now being used to our detriment by the very things we have embraced as convenient-digital interaction, quick logins and caller ID.
Here is a quick check-list to remember:
If someone calls from an institution don’t assume that they are calling from the institution. Call the caller back using the main switchboard. Caller ID doesn’t work anymore.
If someone sends you an urgent email, ask for their number and give it to them. Ask questions, but don’t send any money. It’s also not real.
It’s cheap and easy now to impersonate a voice, and create digital photos and videos that look real.
Don’t buy online using the friends and family feature of Paypal.
Don’t purchase gift cards, period. But don’t do it for anyone who contacts you.
All of this leads to a loss of trust. We also lost some of our humanity and community when we started trading for convenience.
