hobby, the slog and the quest
Here is a simple XY Grid to help you plan your next project, freelance job or startup.
It is not uncommon for people to try and turn a hobby into a business. The work itself may be enjoyable, but the long hours and hard work are exhausting. It might not be worthwhile to spend your time on something that many people can do, but that customers don’t really value. It’s hard to make money from hobbies like taking pictures, singing or playing the flute.
In the top-right quadrant there are endless opportunities and plenty of jobs for people who have the ability to do difficult work (unpopular work) that is highly valued in the eyes of customers who will pay money to solve their problem. A bagpiper gets paid less than a forensic accountant.
Thank you for choosing to tackle a difficult problem, even if you are serving a clientele with limited resources. It will be a long journey, but it can be worthwhile if you truly believe that you are making a difference.
In the bottom-right quadrant, there’s a professional sportsperson or other job where you can do well if you are actually the best. Know what you are getting into before starting. The Dip really exists.
