Hobson’s Choice is often referred to as a bad choice. He was a liveryman who rented horses in pre-industrial London. Each customer could choose the horse that was closest to their door. Hobson’s Choice is not a choice at all.
This system ensured that the most expensive horses weren’t overworked. This meant you couldn’t insist on a horse that wasn’t the best for everyone.
It is tempting to think that we will all be better off if each of us chooses the best option.
Hobson is right sometimes.
