ributions that are valuable

We don’t know for sure.

Netflix has released its first detailed analysis on how many hours were spent watching the top 15000+ shows over the course of a six-month period. Here is the files.

Who won?

This question is the real lesson. Most organizations have no idea where the real value is. All the time, we’re playing Moneyball.

It’s easy to dismiss the obvious answer that more hours watched = greater value. Netflix is likely to lose money if a couch potato watches 80 hours per week.

Shiny trap: A show which is popular, but can be easily replaced by a show that has the luck to become popular.

The creator of the show may be able to create value by creating a show which is so good that it keeps people paying Netflix even if they watch only an hour per week.

It could be a show a group feels is worth discussing, and each hour of watching translates to new customers for the channel.

It could be a show which earns them the reputation of being creator-friendly and brings them in contact with the next generation.

It could be a show that is relatively inexpensive to license, but has a big impact on a hard-to-reach audience.

The employee who, at the last minute, made sure that the car did not smell like cigarettes or discovered a defect which could have caused a breakdown is the most valuable. Saving a customer who is loyal and long-term is more valuable than a flashy ad designed to attract bargain-hunting short-term customers.

It’s likely that you have a team who is confused as to where the real value lies, whether they are running a campaign, a fundraiser for a non profit or a networking group.
