We have evolved to be cautious of change. We are limited in our attention, new things may be perceived as a threat, and the status-quo is comfortable.
We spend much time worrying about (and arguing over) the changes that are coming in our lives. But we don’t think about what we are used to.
In a decade, people will view the things we are doing now as foolish, dangerous or selfish. They would be shunned if they were introduced now. It would be hard to sell the coal mine if someone invented it.
It’s not that any technology or habit is dangerous by nature. The takeaway is that it’s not always a good idea to give the benefit of doubt to established habits and technologies.
