Good riddance.
It is not clear that being able to write book reports or regurgitate essays in high school will lead to happiness or success later on in life.
Handwriting became obsolete as typing became more common. While some lamented the loss, others saw it as an opportunity for humanity to have a greater impact on the world, regardless of whether they attended a prep school.
GPT3 is being banned by New York City schools because it is so good at writing superficial essays that its command structure as an essay sorting tool is undermined. GPT3 is now an easy task to grade (and easy to assign).
High school essays were plagued by a wide range of problems. Banning Danny Dunn’s Homework Machine, the most popular essay device in history, is not the solution. It’s actually a great chance to find a better path forward.
The essay’s first challenge was to give useful feedback in an asymmetrical way. Do the math in 30 essays of 5 minutes each. It doesn’t scale and five minutes isn’t enough time to honour the two hours that you asked students to dedicate to the work.
The second challenge was created by the superficial inspection system. Students receive more points for clear sentence structure and good typing than for thinking deeply, challenging the status quo, or changing their mind. You will probably do better essays if you were raised in a family with verbally adept members. However, this is not because you did not put in much effort.
The third problem was the inability to understand why kids were writing essays. There wasn’t an essay shortage. It was, in essence, to show that they had read the right things or to be able to make persuasive arguments. Essays indicated that you could both read and think.
Except…
These signals were actually an indication that you could do enough work to convince an overwhelmed teacher that your efforts were worth it.

Our job when we are on our own is to find the best lectures on the topic on YouTube or Khan Academy. We do our homework together in the live classroom.
If you have a school with a large class and good technology, encourage students to discuss what they have read or learned. You can teach them how to create arguments and to be confident enough to defend them in real-time. Teachers can also ask students questions. Students can also ask one another questions. They can use GPT and other tools to help them get started, but the real work is in coming up with something better.
Although this may seem like more work than it is for teachers at first, teachers are actually signing up for it when they become teachers.
This model is much less cohesive and manageable than the one that relies on straight rows and boring lectures. It will be a very difficult transition. It’s not difficult to see how it can be done.
It’s no longer necessary to hire someone to create a press release, a medical report, or an investor deck. These are free, instant and a good example of what is possible. Going forward, the opportunity remains the same: Bringing insight to interesting problems. [More.]
