Culture seeks shortcuts.
The oldest shorthand is “Friend or enemy?”
We can save a lot of time and reduce our fear if we know the answer.
Labeling extends beyond the team, cadre or tribe that someone belongs to. The labeling extends beyond the way we choose to show which box we belong in – fashion, sports, technology, or even how we speak. It becomes a goal in itself to find shortcuts.
Then it can become toxic. We lose dignity and nuance when we divide people by race, identity, background, or caste.
In our attempt to fit everyone into a box we forget a lot. We miss the opportunity to learn from someone. In exchange for what we perceive as security, we sacrifice the benefit-of-the doubt. We also take away the humanity from people who make it difficult for us to fit them into a particular niche.
Pigeonholes work best for pigeons.
