Labor Day has been celebrated in the US and Canada for more than 130 Years. May Day is also a relatively new holiday.
It’s mostly a seasonal event around here. But it was created to dedicate a single day to a cause that deserves so much more… the workers who toil and sacrifice to build.
Everybody has to work. But now more than ever, people can choose the type of work that they do. It doesn’t matter where you work, as long as it isn’t here.
It’s safe to say that almost everyone reading this blog is in a profession that was unrecognizable for someone who worked when Labor Day first began. Many of these jobs would be unrecognizable by people who worked just 15 years ago.
Now, only 9% of office workers in Manhattan work five days a weeks.
AI is a new shift that has accelerated the pace of change.
Similarly, there are many jobs where people work for free. Volunteer editors at Wikipedia, amateur violinists, and people who build houses or help feed the hungry are all examples of volunteer work.
Does it count as labor if you get to pick?
As the market for our efforts splits, too many people will be left behind. Many people are stuck in their jobs, or have been indentured. They also receive low pay and are undervalued.
We should make wise choices if we are lucky enough to be given the choice.
