We use code words or slang to make sure that others don’t understand what we are saying. This example is a good example of how far some people will go to hide their views on Chinese politics.
If you use a code that is sufficiently hidden, your listeners will not understand what you are saying. It must be communicated if it is in the language. Maxwell Smart used the Cone of Silence to communicate in secret with the Chief. The Chief was unable to hear him.
When you speak, other people will understand what you mean.
Why bother?
Vernacular language elevates those who use it, while isolating those who do not understand it.
We become insiders when we speak in the voice of an insider.
Insular languages can be amplified to help create tribal identity.
