Here’s a simple matrix that could change your perspective on internal stories.

It can be helpful to believe in something useful, but it’s not true. Maybe the tooth fairy.

We can move forward with confidence when we act on what is both useful and true. The truth is the same whether others acknowledge it or not.

The cynical corner is located in the upper left. It focuses on things which are true but not very useful. It’s not helpful to think about how a critic panned your previous film, particularly if it wasn’t intended to please them.

In the lower left, you’ll see the trap of believing untrue things and also those that aren’t helpful. These beliefs can lead to ennui and frustration, as well as division.
